Self-Love: Are Your Actions Matching Your Words?

February 12, 2025

Every February, we're bombarded with messages about romantic love. But let's talk about a more fundamental relationship - the one with yourself.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

As Physicians, we excel at caring for others. We teach our children about self-worth. We counsel patients about self-care. Yet our own actions often tell a different story.

If you truly loved yourself, would you:

  • Put everyone else's needs before your own?

  • Avoid asking for help at all costs?

  • Let your boundaries crumble under pressure?

  • Live by others' expectations instead of your values?

The Silent Teaching

Our children are watching. They're learning about self-love not from our carefully chosen words or morning affirmations, but from how we treat ourselves.

When we consistently:

  • Sacrifice our needs for others

  • Work through exhaustion

  • Skip meals to finish charts

  • Apologize for having boundaries

We're teaching powerful lessons about self-worth that no amount of positive talk can counter.

Transforming Love from Words to Action

Real self-love isn't just affirmations. It's:

  • Setting firm boundaries

  • Asking for help without shame

  • Honoring your own desires

  • Protecting your peace

  • Living your values

Moving Forward

Start by examining where your actions align (or don't) with self-love. Notice the gaps between what you say and what you do.

Because the most important relationship you'll ever have is with yourself. And like any relationship, it requires more than just words - it needs consistent action.
