AI for Physician Moms: The Shortcut You Deserve
April 02, 2025
As Physicians, we're trained to be skeptical. We question new treatments, demand evidence, and approach innovations with caution. This skepticism serves us well in medicine, but when it comes to technological advances like artificial intelligence, it can hold us back from tools that might actually make our lives easier.
So let me be direct: AI is the greatest technological advancement since the internet itself, and as Physician moms, we need to embrace it rather than resist it.
Why Physicians Should Embrace AI
Many of us have concerns about AI. We worry about job displacement, accuracy issues, or simply feel it's one more technological hurdle to overcome in our already overwhelming lives.
But here's why resistance is futile (and counterproductive):
AI is inevitable - Just as medicine has evolved with every technological advancement from X-rays to electronic health records, AI integration is coming whether we like it or not.
Those who adapt will thrive - Remember how the older generation of Physicians handled the rise of mid-levels? That approach didn't work out so well. Instead of ignoring AI, we need to learn how to use it to its fullest potential.
You deserve a shortcut - You've chosen the hardest path possible - becoming a Physician AND a mother. You've earned the right to take the easy route whenever possible.
Beyond the Medical Scribe: Practical Ways to Use AI
While many healthcare systems are implementing AI for documentation, that barely scratches the surface of what's possible. Here are some ways I'm using AI that have transformed my efficiency:
As a superior search engine: Instead of sorting through Google results, get direct answers with sources from ChatGPT
For content creation: Process and repurpose content across different platforms while maintaining your voice
For everyday problem-solving: From meal planning with pantry ingredients to creating educational activities for children
For professional communication: Draft difficult emails that maintain professionalism while clearly communicating your position
The applications are limitless, and many Physician moms haven't even begun to tap into this potential.
How to Get Great Results From AI: A Step-by-Step Guide
If you've tried AI and been unimpressed, you might not have been using it optimally. Here's my three-step process for getting excellent results:
Step 1: Give the AI Context About Its Role
Begin by telling the AI who you want it to be. For example:
"You are a world-class hiring manager for the top nanny agency in the world. You service clients who are high-earning professionals, highly educated, and have been in the business for 30 years finding the absolute best candidates."
This context helps the AI understand the perspective you want it to adopt when answering.
Step 2: Provide Detailed Information in Your Query
Don't be afraid to write paragraphs or even pages describing what you need. The more information you provide, the better the output.
For example, when looking for a nanny, share:
Previous issues you've had with childcare
Your children's specific needs and personalities
Your work schedule and family dynamics
Concerns about the hiring process
Special requirements or preferences
As with human colleagues, AI can't read your mind - the more context you provide, the better the result.
Step 3: Provide Feedback and Refine
The first output is rarely perfect. Unlike human colleagues who might get defensive or tired of revisions, AI has no feelings. Continue giving feedback until you get exactly what you need:
"This sounds too harsh, make it friendlier"
"This doesn't address my concern about X"
"Can you reframe this section to emphasize Y"
Keep refining until you get a result that truly serves your needs.
Final Thoughts
As Physician moms, we've mastered the art of doing things the hard way. We've survived medical school, residency, and the early years of parenthood. We've earned the right to take shortcuts whenever possible.
AI offers us a chance to reclaim some of our time and mental energy. It's not about cutting corners - it's about strategic efficiency that allows us to focus our expertise where it matters most.
You don't need to figure everything out on your own. Just as you'd seek a colleague's consult for a complex medical case, allow AI to be your assistant for the tasks that drain your time and energy.
You deserve ease, doc. It's time to embrace it.
