The Most Important Investment I Made in 2024

February 26, 2025

When I tell people I spent $52,600 on coaching last year, the reaction is usually a mix of shock and disbelief. After all, that's a down payment on a house. That's private school tuition. That's a luxury vacation.

But here's what most people miss: those traditional investments depreciate or fade. Houses need maintenance. Vacations end. Even education becomes outdated. The returns from investing in yourself? Those compound infinitely.

As Physicians, we carefully calculate ROI on everything from real estate to retirement accounts. Yet we hesitate to invest in our own growth, peace, and joy. We'll spend thousands on our children's activities but question spending money on our own development.

The Truth About Self-Investment

When I invest in my growth, I'm not just investing in myself. I'm investing in:

  • A more present, joyful mother

  • A stronger, more connected marriage

  • A more engaged, energized Physician

  • A legacy of self-worth for my children

This isn't about luxury or indulgence. It's about recognizing that our worth extends beyond our ability to serve others. It's about modeling for our children what it looks like to value yourself enough to invest in your own growth.

The Real Returns

The returns on this investment are both tangible and intangible:

  • Enhanced leadership skills

  • Stronger boundaries

  • Deeper self-awareness

  • More authentic relationships

  • Increased energy and presence

Most importantly, this investment creates ripple effects through generations. When we model self-worth and intentional growth for our children, we're passing down something more valuable than any property or trust fund - we're passing down the ability to live a peaceful, fulfilled life.
