Making Waves in Early Motherhood: Why Now is the Time for Big Career Moves

November 06, 2024

You've probably heard it a thousand times: "Wait until your kids are older to make big career moves." But what if I told you that the early years of motherhood might actually be the perfect time to shake things up?

Recently, I came across a post from a Physician mom considering opening a private practice but hesitating because of her young children. This got me thinking about a perspective I've held for a while now: the early years of motherhood are an ideal time for big career shifts.

Here's why:

  1. Your Kids Won't Remember Let's be real - your one-year-old isn't going to remember that you were working long hours to set up your practice. What they will remember is the lifestyle you create for them as they grow older. By putting in the work now, you're setting the stage for more flexibility and presence when they're older and truly need you.

  2. Building for the Future When you start building your dream career now, you're creating a future where you can be more present when your kids really need you - like during those tumultuous teenage years. Imagine having a thriving practice that allows you to work fewer hours and be there for every important moment.

  3. The Power of Community One of the biggest hurdles for Physician moms considering entrepreneurship is the lack of supportive community. It's crucial to surround yourself with people who believe in the viability of private practice and can offer guidance and support. Seek out communities of Physician entrepreneurs who can show you the ropes.

  4. Help is Non-Negotiable Whether you're opening a practice or staying in your current job, getting help is essential. This might mean hiring a nanny, getting an au pair, or enlisting family support. Remember, outsourcing isn't a luxury - it's a necessity for building the career and life you want.

  5. You Can Avoid Burnout By taking control of your career now, you're setting yourself up to avoid burnout in the long run. Creating a practice or career that aligns with your values and desired lifestyle can lead to greater job satisfaction and work-life integration.

  6. Your Kids Will Learn from Your Example By pursuing your dreams and building something for yourself, you're setting a powerful example for your children. They'll grow up seeing a mom who goes after what she wants and creates the life she desires.

Remember, there's never a "perfect" time to make a big move. But by starting now, you're giving yourself the runway to build something amazing by the time your kids are old enough to really appreciate it.

So, doc, if you've been hesitating to make that big career move because of your young kids, I encourage you to reconsider. With the right support, mindset, and planning, you can create an incredible future for both you and your family.

Are you ready to make waves in your career? The time is now!
