From Vision to Reality: How Physician Moms Can Shape Their Dream Life

As Physicians, we're trained to focus on the practical, the immediate, the tangible. But what if I told you that the key to achieving your dream life starts with something as simple as thinking about it?
In my recent podcast episodes, I've been talking about the importance of envisioning your dream life and how your mind acts as an "algorithm" to help you achieve it. Today, I want to dive deeper into this concept and share a personal story that illustrates just how powerful this process can be.
The Power of Visioning
The first step in creating your dream life is simply allowing yourself to envision it. This isn't about wallowing in what you don't have or setting unrealistic expectations. It's about connecting with your true desires and giving your subconscious mind a clear target to work towards.
But here's the catch - to do this effectively, you need time and mental space. And for many of us Physician moms, that's in short supply. This is why I always come back to the importance of having help. It's not just about managing your daily tasks; it's about creating the space for you to dream and grow.
My Personal Journey
Let me share a story that really drove this point home for me. For the past three years, I've been part of the EntreMD Business School. Every October, we have a retreat where we set goals and envision our future. For the first two years, I went through the motions, writing down goals that I never really felt connected to.
But this last time was different. I had already started my locums work, had my second child, and was developing ideas for what would become my coaching program. As I sat down to write my goals, including plans for a brick-and-mortar practice in Houston, something clicked.
I realized that my dream of living a nomadic life with my family was completely at odds with having a physical practice in one location. It sounds obvious now, but it took that moment of clarity, that connection with my true desires, to see the misalignment.
The Subconscious at Work
This experience showed me the power of our subconscious mind. Even when I wasn't actively working towards my goals, the simple act of writing them down and thinking about them had guided me in the right direction. My "algorithm" was working behind the scenes, helping me make decisions that aligned with my true desires.
Taking Baby Steps
It's important to remember that this process isn't about making drastic, overnight changes. It's about taking small, consistent steps in the right direction. Once you have a clear vision of your dream life, you'll start to notice things in your current life that don't align. You'll make different decisions, big and small, that lead you closer to your goals.
Your Next Steps
So, what can you do to start this process?
Make time for yourself. Even if it's just 10 minutes a day, create space to think and dream.
Envision your dream life in detail. What does it look like? How does it feel?
Write down your vision. The act of putting it on paper makes it more real and gives your subconscious something to work with.
Pay attention to misalignments. Are there aspects of your current life or future plans that don't fit with your vision?
Take small steps. What's one tiny action you can take today towards your dream life?
