From Burnout to Breakthrough: A Physician Mom's Journey
October 20, 2024
We may often find ourselves juggling multiple roles - healer, nurturer, partner, and more. It's a balancing act that can sometimes lead to burnout and self-doubt. But what if I told you that these challenges could be the catalyst for incredible personal growth and a reimagined career path?
In a recent ✨Stethoscopes and Strollers✨ episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Sara Ionescu, a family medicine Physician who's transitioned from clinical practice to becoming a YouTube fitness enthusiast. Her journey offers valuable insights for any Physician mom feeling overwhelmed or questioning their path.
Embracing the Unexpected
Dr. Sara's story begins with a familiar scenario - expectations vs. reality in motherhood. Like many of us, she had preconceived notions about what motherhood would look like, shaped by the women in her life. However, she quickly realized that being a Physician mom came with its own unique challenges.
"I thought that would be me. But I also was a Physician. And so when I actually had my daughter, I realized that mom world, when you're also working as a Physician, they don't quite go together in that way," Dr. Sara shared.
This realization is crucial. It reminds us that it's okay if our journey doesn't match our expectations. The key is to adapt and find what works for us and our families.
The Power of Support and Flexibility
One of the most striking aspects of Dr. Sara's story is the support she received from her husband. When she was struggling to find direction after leaving clinical practice, it was her husband who introduced her to the concept of business coaching. This support allowed her to explore new possibilities and ultimately led to her current path.
This underscores the importance of having a support system - whether it's a partner, family, friends, or professional help. As Physician moms, we often feel we need to do it all alone, but seeking and accepting support can open doors we never knew existed.
Redefining Self-Care and Exercise
A significant part of Dr. Sara's new journey involves helping other busy moms redefine exercise and self-care. This resonated deeply with me, and I suspect it will with many of you too. We often have this idea that exercise needs to be an hour-long, high-intensity workout to be "worth it." But as Dr. Sara points out, any movement is beneficial.
"It's just getting moving. And it's about things being simple. So it can be done anywhere, anytime. You could be at work, you could be at home. You can do, you know, minutes and minutes. You can break it down and do a few things," Dr. Sara explained.
This approach to exercise - making it accessible and doable in small chunks - can be a game-changer for busy Physician moms. It's about progress, not perfection.
The Value of Investing in Yourself
Perhaps the most powerful takeaway from our conversation was the importance of investing in yourself. For Dr. Sara, this meant engaging in coaching, which she credits with accelerating her personal growth and helping her rediscover herself.
"I am a more present mom, I'm a more present wife, I'm able to enjoy my life in a way that I never could before," she shared.
This serves as a powerful reminder that taking time for ourselves - whether through coaching, exercise, or any other form of self-care - isn't selfish. It's necessary for us to show up as our best selves for our patients, our families, and ourselves.
Moving Forward
As Physician moms, we're used to putting others first. But Dr. Sara's journey reminds us of the importance of prioritizing ourselves too. Whether it's redefining what exercise looks like in your life, seeking support when you need it, or investing in personal growth through coaching, remember that taking care of yourself is not just okay - it's essential.
Your journey may not look like you expected. It may involve twists and turns, moments of doubt, and periods of transformation. But remember, every step of your path - including the challenges - shapes who you are and equips you to make a unique impact, whether in clinical practice or beyond.
So, doc, I challenge you this week to take one small step towards prioritizing yourself. It could be a 5-minute workout, reaching out for support, or simply giving yourself permission to dream about what you really want. Your future self will thank you.
