Empowering Our Children: The Bedtime Lesson That Goes Beyond Nightlights

September 11, 2024

Sometimes, the most profound lessons we teach our children come from the simplest moments. I want to share a recent experience that reminded me of the power we have to shape our children's communication skills and self-advocacy.

The Nightlight Incident

It was a typical evening in our household. I had just tucked my 4-year-old son into bed, his younger sister already asleep in the same room. As I closed the door, I heard it - the unmistakable wail of a child in distress.

My first reaction was annoyance. Would he wake his sister? Why was he crying? But as I re-entered the room, I realized this was more than just a bedtime hiccup. It was a teachable moment.

The Power of Words

As I knelt beside my son's bed, I asked him a simple question: "What could you have done instead of cry to get me to turn on the nightlight?" His initial response - that he should have counted to ten - made me smile. It was a technique we'd taught him for managing big emotions, but not quite what I was looking for in this situation.

Gently, I guided him towards the answer: "You could have asked. You could have come out and said, 'Mommy, Daddy, the nightlight is not on. Can you turn it on for me, please?'"

This moment crystallized an important lesson not just for my son, but for me as a parent:

  1. Encourage Communication: We often respond quickly to our children's cries, especially when they're babies. But as they grow, it's crucial to encourage them to use words to express their needs.

  2. Empower Through Language: By reminding my son that he has the power to use his words, I'm not just solving an immediate problem. I'm empowering him with a lifelong skill.

  3. Differentiate Responses: It's important to help older children understand the difference between how we respond to a baby's cries and their more developed ability to communicate.

  4. Get on Their Level: Physically kneeling down to my son's level helped create a connection that made the lesson more impactful.

The Physician Mom Perspective

As Physicians, we understand the importance of clear communication. We rely on our patients to articulate their symptoms and concerns. By teaching our children to use their words effectively, we're not just making our lives as parents easier - we're setting them up for success in all areas of life.

Moreover, this skill of self-advocacy is crucial in healthcare settings. A patient who can clearly communicate their needs is more likely to receive appropriate and timely care.

Beyond the Bedtime Story

This bedtime incident might seem small, but it represents a larger truth: every interaction with our children is an opportunity to teach, empower, and shape their future selves.

As Physician moms, we have the unique perspective of understanding both the medical and emotional importance of effective communication. Let's use that knowledge to raise children who are not afraid to use their voices, express their needs, and advocate for themselves.

Remember, it's not just about turning on nightlights. It's about illuminating the path to confident, articulate adults who know the power of their words.
